Our History

In 1902 Green Township had 4 schools ---Huntsburg, Huntsville,Tranquility, and Greensville. The first school in Green Township appears to have been one located just northwest of Huntsville in 1790. The first official school was built in Huntsville in 1835 and replaced with a new building in 1865. However, this school was built on land for which the D.L. & W. railroad had a right of way. Since the railroad was running over the existing school, they agreed to build a new one.

This one room brick building was large enough for 40 students and had a basement. The first school at Greensville was started in 1820 in William Green's store. A stone building was erected in 1832 and used until the school/church was erected in 1866. The school was the upper story and the church was below.

Near Tranquility, classes were being taught before 1815 in a dilapidated log cabin. They then moved to the Community House on the corner of Rtes. 517 and 611.

The Huntsburg School was a brick building built off Shotwell Road and was abandoned in 1902.

In 1922 the 3 existing schools were consolidated in a building on Winding Hill Road, which is now Kennedy Road. This is the current Green Township Municipal Building.

The first part of our present building was built in 1964 for a cost of $170,000. The upper grade students moved here in February 1965. An addition was added in 1972 and grades 3 to 8 and the kitchen were moved to this building. The third addition was built in 1988 and all grades were moved to this site, closing the school on Kennedy Road. We added our fourth addition which includes a middle school wing pictured at the top of the page, a new gym and offices and a bright new future for Green Hills School.
